What is a Destination Management Organisation?

A Destination Management Organisation (DMO) is an organisation with responsibility for the development, management, and promotion of a specific tourist destination.

Dmo

The main role of a DMO is to work in partnership with local stakeholders, including the government, businesses, non-governmental organisations, and the community to improve the attractiveness and competitivity of a destination.

DMOs perform a variety of vital functions for a tourist destination.

This is why they are important:

Developing the product

DMOs work to develop and improve a destination’s tourism offering. They work with local tourist operators to create new experiences, attractions and services to satisfy the demands of visitors. This may include the development of new tourist trails, special events, accommodation options, and other infrastructure.

The creation of the product is a delicate but crucial phase of a DMO. Developing a tourist product means, as well as meeting the needs of visitors, giving the location a distinctive character. Tourist destinations which have well-defined and well-organised products are able to penetrate the market in an effective and lasting way, helping to grow an audience among target audiences that have a tendency towards loyalty.

Destination Management

A DMO plays a crucial role in the overall management of the destination. They work with the local authorities to manage tourism sustainably, balancing the positive impacts with the protection of natural, cultural, and historic resources.

DMOs work to improve the visitor experience by providing tourist information, managing tourist flows, and promoting responsible behaviour by visitors.

Collaboration and Coordination

DMOs facilitate collaboration between different stakeholders in the tourism sector, such as hotels, restaurants, attractions, suppliers of services, travel agencies, and other organisations. They promote cooperation and partnerships between different parties, fostering the creation of networks and alliances that support the development and promotion of the destination.

Promotion and Marketing

A DMO is committed to promoting the tourist destination through targeted marketing campaigns, advertising drives, attending trade shows and events, an online presence, and the use of social media. This helps to create awareness and interest for the destination, attracting visitors and increasing the flow of tourists.

What does Kumbe do for DMOs?

We offer guidance to DMOs, even before they become destinations. What does that involve? Let’s start at the very beginning. Italy is a land packed with unexplored areas that are full of potential.

Places and tourist micro-organisations which just need some help to find their identity and tourism product, to develop themselves and welcome visitors.  Kumbe’s expertise lies in studying these locations, their situations and opportunities and, as a result, supporting their digital transformation.

Digital Transformation

This is a process which involves interaction and collaboration between different organisations, industry professionals, and bodies. Kumbe has the expertise to guide these discussions and dynamics, supporting regions to find their digital tourism character and present themselves to the world online in the most comprehensive and effective way possible.

The work we have done over the years with some of the leading Italian DMOs has allowed us to understand the requirements, the demands, and the desires of regions. Thanks to our experience, we are able to provide help and guidance for destinations looking to develop digitally.

Creating and studying digital strategies, consultation and destination management, creation of technologically advanced web portals, and social media and digital communication: here you can find all of the services which we offer to transform destinations into digital DMOs.
